Visiting Kep

From the early 20th century through the 1960s, Kep was Cambodia's premier beach town, drawing weekend holiday-makers to its picturesque shores and sporting the ocean side villas of the privileged class. For gift of welcoming the new year of 2009, we went visiting Kep on 20-21 December, 2009. We stayed on Tonsai island for a night bebore returning to Phnom Penh.

Dozens Killed in Bangkok Nightclub Fire 1/1/2009 by Thaizer : 59 people have died and many more have been injured in a fire which took hold in a Bangkok nightclub shortly after midnight as party-goers were celebrating the New Year. The blaze occurred at the Santika club located on Sukhumvit 63 which is close to the Ekamai and Thong Lor districts of the Thai capital. Cambodia, Kuwait sign trade, aviation, investment deals 8/5/2008 AEST
The prime ministers of Cambodia and Kuwait have signed five new agreements, covering trade, aviation and investment.Prime Minister Hun Sen and visiting Kuwaiti premier Sheikh Nasser Mohammed al-Ahmed al-Sabah met in Phnom Penh on Monday.Prime Minister Hun Sen says there'll be further talk on boosting trade and investment, and says Kuwait has promised to help Cambodia develop its agricultural sector.Cambodian government spokesman Khieu Kanharith says the two premiers also discussed oil cooperation, with Cambodia asking Kuwait to help train local experts on the petroleum industry.
Thailand, Cambodia continue border temple disputes
Thailand's supreme military commander, General Boonsrang Niempradit, has told Cambodia to stay away from Ta Moan Thom after the 13th-century temple became the latest hot spot between the two countries. The Bangkok Post quotes the general saying the army has informed its Cambodian counterparts of the Thai position, adding that if Cambodian soldiers enter the area, they will be pushed back. The newspaper says Ta Moan Thom temple was thrust into the spotlight on Sunday when Cambodia accused Thai troops of staying in the area it claimed to be part of Cambodian soil. The development came after weeks of tension over land surrounding the Preah Vihear temple. There have been high level talks between the two governments in a effort to settle that dispute, but a Cambodian government spokesman says further talks won't take place until Cambodia forms a new government in late September. Cambodia's Defence Minister Tea Banh says Cambodian soldiers and civilians are usually allowed to enter the Ta Moan Thom ruins for religious ceremonies, but over the weekend Thai soldiers blocked their way.
Reports Cambodia accusing Thai troops of occupying disupted temple 8/4/2008 from AEST
Cambodia is reported to have escalated the border dispute over the Preah Vihear temple by accusing Thai troops of occupying a temple far to the west. The Bangkok Post newspaper says a Cambodian spokesman in Phnom Penh claims about 70 Thais have been at the 13th Century Ta Muen Thom temple complex in Surin province since Thursday.It says the Thai Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag says no troops have moved into the area. The newspaper says the Cambodian statement appears to be linking the Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom disputes, but although both are in border areas, they are not connected in either distant or recent history - until now. It says Thai military commanders are relaxed saying there's no apparent tension at the site. They say there's a paramilitary post there because Ta Muen Thom belongs to Thailand and there are soldiers deployed to take care of the area.
S Korean President to visit Cambodia this year 2/26/2008 from xinhua: South Korean President Lee Myung Bak will visit Cambodia sometime this year, at the invitation by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen during their Monday meeting in Seoul, a senior official said here Tuesday.
Lee will visit Cambodia to strengthen the cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, economy and personal relations, Hor Namhong, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, told a press conference.
The press conference was held upon the return of a senior Cambodian delegation led by Hun Sen from the swearing-in ceremony of Lee Myung Bak in Seoul.
"The visit will bring about closer economic ties between the two sides to help develop Cambodia," Hor said.
Since Lee was former economic advisor for Hun Sen, the two men have had deep personal relations, Hor said, adding that this year is also the 11th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
As the No. 1 foreign investor in Cambodia, South Korea is contributing large amount of money in the construction field in Cambodia, Hor said.
Cambodia builds two statues for famous monk and musician : 2/22/2008 From xinhua: The city government of Phnom Penh on Thursday held inauguration ceremony for the statues of a famous monk called Choun Nat and a musician called Krom Ngoy to honor their efforts and contributions to help the Cambodian society in the 19th and 20th centuries. "We built their statues to respect and honor their efforts while they were alive in helping Cambodian society," Major Kep Chuktema said while addressing the ceremony.
Cambodia to deport U.S. veteran for false threat : 2/22/2008 From reuters.com: Cambodia will deport a U.S. veteran who told journalists that militants were planning a rocket attack on the U.S embassy in Phnom Penh, deputy police chief Sok Phal said on Thursday. Gerald Forbes, 63, of Hawaii, was arrested for sending e-mails to journalists asking them to spread the warning the embassy would be rocketed, then overrun, he said.
A Cambodia team to visit Bangkok on Preah Vihear issue : 2/22/2008 From nationmultimedia.com: Cambodia will send a team of officials to Bangkok next month in an attempt to end the conflict over the proposal to have Unesco include the Preah Vihear shrine on the World Heritage list, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said Saturday.. The team will be led by Prime Minister Hun Sen's advisory chief Var Kim Hong. Cambodia last year asked Unesco to place Preah Vihear on the World Heritage list, a move which Thailand objected to.
The Queen of Spain visits the Open Schools Program 2/20/2008 From Khmer Software Initiative
The Queen of Spain visits the Open Schools Program, a joint initiative of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the Open Institute to use ICT to improve the quality of Education in Cambodia.
Sofía, Queen of Spain, visited the National Institute of Education (NIE) on 20 February 2008, entity of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport in charge of training all the upper secondary school teachers in Cambodia.
Conducted Khmer Blog Workshop 1/18/2008 From Khmer Software Initiative
On 18th January 2008, KhmerOS presented Khmer Unicode and software to students of the Royal University of Law and Economics, during the Khmer Blog Workshop, with 135 participants. On 15th February 2008, we also presented at Chenla University with 75 participants.
The purpose of this workshops is to introduce the Web2.0 tools, Blog (focus on Blog in Khmer), Khmer Unicode and Software to the University students. During the workshop everyone can bring their own laptop to access free wireless internet to practice what they have learnt during presentation.
